Born-again Christianity
Overview
Born-again Christianity is a widely used cross-cutting expression for Christians and communities that emphasise personal conversion or new birth through faith in Jesus Christ; it is not a denomination in its own right.
History
The language draws on New Testament imagery, especially John 3, and became especially prominent in evangelical, revivalist, and Pentecostal settings.
Beliefs and emphases
It commonly emphasises personal faith, repentance, conversion, assurance, Scripture, discipleship, and witness. Its meaning and sacramental implications vary between traditions.
Worship and practice
Worship and church practice follow the host tradition: it may occur in Baptist, Anglican, Pentecostal, independent, and many other settings.
Organisation and life
There is no single institution, membership list, or governing body for born-again Christianity.
