Overview

Christian Science is a church and healing-oriented Christian movement founded by Mary Baker Eddy and formally organised as The First Church of Christ, Scientist.

History

It emerged in the United States in the late nineteenth century from Eddy’s study, teaching, and writing, especially Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

Beliefs and emphases

It reads the Bible with Science and Health and teaches the spiritual reality of God and humanity, the healing work of Christ Jesus, prayer, and Christian healing. Its theological language and interpretation of matter, sin, illness, and salvation differ substantially from many other Christian traditions.

Worship and practice

Sunday services feature Bible and Science and Health readings, hymns, prayer, and a sermon assembled from authorised lesson materials. Wednesday meetings include testimony, prayer, and sharing.

Organisation and life

The Mother Church in Boston and its Manual provide a worldwide framework, while branch churches and societies have local life. Practitioners and nurses have distinct roles within the movement.
