Overview

Community of Christ is an international restorationist church formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS).

History

It emerged in 1860 around Joseph Smith III, who was recognised by its members as successor to Joseph Smith Jr. It later adopted the name Community of Christ and developed a distinct global, ecumenically engaged identity.

Beliefs and emphases

It centres Jesus Christ and values Scripture, including an open Doctrine and Covenants, alongside the Bible and Book of Mormon. Its present teaching gives strong attention to peace, justice, reconciliation, the worth of persons, and continuing communal discernment.

Worship and practice

Congregations practise Baptism, confirmation, the Lord’s Supper, blessing, ordination, and other ministries. The church’s temple in Independence is used for worship, education, and a peace-oriented ministry rather than functioning in the same way as LDS temples.

Organisation and life

It has a President and prophet, apostles, priesthood offices, mission centres, and a World Conference. Women may be ordained, and participation is organised through its current church law and conference decisions.
