Overview

Evangelical Free Church is a family of evangelical free-church associations rather than one worldwide denomination.

History

Its roots include European free-church movements that separated from state-church control and later North American Scandinavian and other evangelical associations.

Beliefs and emphases

Many Evangelical Free churches are evangelical and Trinitarian, emphasising Scripture, the gospel of Christ, conversion, mission, and local church responsibility. Their views on baptism, charismatic gifts, and other secondary issues may differ among national bodies and congregations.

Worship and practice

Services are generally Protestant and evangelical, centred on Bible teaching, prayer, music, ordinances, discipleship, and mission.

Organisation and life

The word “Free” commonly refers both to freedom from state-church control in its history and to autonomous congregational polity. Associations support rather than replace local governance.
