This people is addicted to, and it is a fault, to be always searching after doctrine, and never improving upon what they have; they want something new, something they never heard. I doubt you have not heard all I have said this day. Get up here, ye Elders of Israel, and tell what is in you! It is hard work to get a man to come on this stand, to feed the flock; how dormant you are. But many of the Elders say they want to go away and to preach to the people in the world. Is there any bigger folks than we are, that would hear you? Yes there is. Ye Elders of Israel, ye men of God, how much do you know about the Kingdom of God? and yet ye are always wanting to know something more, when you ought to improve upon what you have. The Prophet Joseph said to me, about sixteen years ago, "If I was to show the Latter-day Saints all the revelations that the Lord has shown unto me, there is scarce a man that would stay with me, they could not bear it." What is there so horrid, that you cannot bear it? Every trait in character that has been infused into man, since the fall, is as diametrically opposed as light is to darkness. Ye Elders of Israel, do you know the ways of God? If the Lord himself was to speak, to tell the Latter-day Saints what to do, he would come in the capacity of an Elder in Israel, and he would preach to you-you would hear precisely the very things that you do now. You may think I do not know, but I know you do not. Let me reveal a little of the will of the Lord. If you do not believe that I tell you the very truth as the secret of the heart of God, you never will be nigher to him than you now are. If he were to come in his power and glory you would dissolve away and go down to hell. He will appear, and you dissolve away, or he will come in the capacity of a man.

Many years ago the Prophet Joseph observed that if the people would have received the revelations he had in his possession and wisely acted upon them, as the Lord would dictate, they might in their power to do and understand have been many years ahead of what they then were.

Into the telestial kingdom will go, according to that which is written here in this revelation, the vicious, the unclean, the ungodly. These are they who say they are some of one and some of another — some of Christ and some of John, and some of Moses, and some of Elias, and some of Esaias, and some of Isaiah, and some of Enoch; But received not the gospel, neither the testimony of Jesus, neither the prophets, neither the everlasting covenant.

Instead of going off on a tangent this way or a tangent some other way, let us be willing to follow the prophets of God who stand here at the head of the Church and who receive the divine guidance of the Almighty. Let us have enough faith and enough courage to be real Latter-day Saints. Let us have enough courage and enough faith to believe in the Articles of Faith. I challenge every Latter-day Saint everywhere to believe and accept and sustain the sixth Article of Faith which I read again: We believe in the same organization that existed in the

Quote
I bear witness to the world today that more than a century and a half ago the iron ceiling was shattered; the heavens were once again opened, and since that time revelations have been continuous. … Since that momentous day in 1820, additional scripture has continued to come, including the numerous and vital revelations flowing in a never-ending stream from God to his prophets on the earth. … … We testify to the world that revelation continues and that the vaults and files of the Church contain these revelations which come month to month and day to day. We testify also that there is, since 1830 when The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized, and will continue to be, so long as time shall last, a prophet, recognized of God and his people, who will continue to interpret the mind and will of the Lord. Now, a word of warning: Let us not make the error of the ancients. Numerous modern sectarians believe in the Abrahams, the Moseses, and the Pauls, but resist believing in today’s prophets. The ancients also could accept the prophets of an earlier day, but denounced and cursed the ones who were their contemporaries. In our day, as in times past, many people expect that if there be revelation it will come with awe-inspiring, earth-shaking display. For many it is hard to accept as revelation those numerous ones in Moses’ time, in Joseph’s time, and in our own year—those revelations which come to prophets as deep, unassailable impressions settling down on the prophet’s mind and heart as dew from heaven or as the dawn dissipates the darkness of night. Expecting the spectacular, one may not be fully alerted to the constant flow of revealed communication. I say, in the deepest of humility, but also by the power and force of a burning testimony in my soul, that from the prophet of the Restoration to the prophet of our own year, the communication line is unbroken, the authority is continuous, a light, brilliant and penetrating, continues to shine. The sound of the voice of the Lord is a continuous melody and a thunderous appeal. For nearly a century and a half there has been no interruption”.

Sixth: The prophet does not have to say “Thus saith the Lord” to give us scripture. Sometimes there are those who haggle over words. They might say the prophet gave us counsel but that we are not obligated to follow it unless he says it is a commandment. But the Lord says of the Prophet Joseph, “Thou shalt give heed unto all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you”. And speaking of taking counsel from the prophet, in D&C 108:1, the Lord states: “Verily thus saith the Lord unto you, my servant Lyman: Your sins are forgiven you, because you have obeyed my voice in coming up hither this morning to receive counsel of him whom I have appointed”.

in the Young Women General Presidency If we are not careful in living our covenants with exactness, our casual efforts may eventually lead us into forbidden paths or to join with those who have already entered the great and spacious building. If not careful, we may even drown in the depths of a filthy river. There is a careful way and a casual way to do everything, including living the gospel. As we consider our commitment to the Savior, are we careful or casual? Because of our mortal nature, don’t we sometimes rationalize our behavior, at times referring to our actions as being in the gray, or mixing good with something that’s not so good? Anytime we say, “however,” “except,” or “but” when it applies to following the counsel of our prophet leaders or living the gospel carefully, we are in fact saying, “That counsel does not apply to me.” We can rationalize all we want, but the fact is, there is not a right way to do the wrong thing!

If we’re with someone, and they will say, “Oh, President Nelson, thank you for this. And thank you for that. Thank you for this adjustment.” ... He is so gracious. And he’ll just, you know, humbly say, “Well, thank you.” And then when they walk away, he’ll say, turn to me and say, “I was just following instructions. I know how to follow instructions.” So meaning, “the Lord told me to do this. And I know how to follow instructions.” Such a moment that would define or represent his ministry would also show him harkening. He loves that word, hearken, meaning listen to obey. Absolutely, because he is always, ever waiting to hear the next thing, feel the next thing, be guided to the next thing. It would have to involve something about the gathering of Israel. And anything that would prepare the world for the Second Coming. This is a man on a mission for the Lord. He is single minded. Whatever rhymes with whatever the Lord needs me to do. That’s what he’s after.

If you have doubts about God the Father and His Beloved Son or the validity of the Restoration or the veracity of Joseph Smith’s divine calling as a prophet, choose to believe and stay faithful. Take your questions to the Lord and to other faithful sources. Study with the desire to believe rather than with the hope that you can find a flaw in the fabric of a prophet’s life or a discrepancy in the scriptures. Stop increasing your doubts by rehearsing them with other doubters. Allow the Lord to lead you on your journey of spiritual discovery.
