Is there a happy future for you and your posterity in these latter days? Absolutely! Most assuredly you have a beautiful future. All wedding feasts are happy occasions. Will there be difficult times when those ominous latter-day warnings and prophecies are fulfilled? Of course there will. There always have been. Be prepared. Will those who have built upon the great rock of Christ withstand such winds, such hail, and the mighty shafts in the whirlwind? You know that they will. You have it on good word. You have it on His word! That “rock upon which ye are built . . . is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men [and women] build they cannot fall” (see Helaman 5:12).

Quote
A wise optimist has an overwhelming advantage over the person who becomes a pessimist in these latter days. ... The important word is wise. The advantage hinges on being a wise optimist. The wise optimist depends on the wonderful and glorious promises the Lord has made for the last days. ... You can be optimistic about the long-range future of the Church. The Lord has made promises about that. Whatever setbacks occur for the Church will be temporary. ... In our time we know that the Lord restored the gospel and His Church through the Prophet Joseph to stand until He comes. Even more wonderfully, He has revealed to His prophets that the Church will be perfectly prepared for the Savior's Second Coming. ... And even in the optimism of proclaiming the gospel, perfecting the saints, and redeeming the dead, our optimism has to be about how God will multiply our efforts. ... We must be wise optimists. We can expect with confidence that power will be poured out upon the saints. It will grow among us. Expect that. And teach it to your children. They will rise higher than we have risen. And there will be a Church prepared for the Savior when He comes in glory.

Quote
I ask everyone within the sound of my voice to take heart, be filled with faith, and remember the Lord has said He “would fight [our] battles, [our] children’s battles, and [the battles of our] children’s children.” And what do we do to merit such a defense? We are to “search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and [then] all things shall work together for [our] good, if [we] walk uprightly and remember the covenant wherewith [we] have covenanted.” The latter days are not a time to fear and tremble. They are a time to be believing and remember our covenants.

Meanwhile, here and now, we live in a time of turmoil. Earthquakes and tsunamis wreak devastation, governments collapse, economic stresses are severe, the family is under attack, and divorce rates are rising. We have great cause for concern. But we do not need to let our fears displace our faith. We can combat those fears by strengthening our faith. Why do we need such resilient faith? Because difficult days are ahead. Rarely in the future will it be easy or popular to be a faithful Latter-day Saint. Each of us will be tested. The Apostle Paul warned that in the latter days, those who diligently follow the Lord “shall suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12). That very persecution can either crush you into silent weakness or motivate you to be more exemplary and courageous in your daily lives. ... I promise you that as you follow Jesus Christ, you will find sustained peace and true joy. As you keep your covenants with increasing precision, and as you defend the Church and kingdom of God on the earth today, the Lord will bless you with strength and wisdom to accomplish what only members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can accomplish.
President Russell M. Nelson

My dear friends, my beloved brothers and sisters, God will watch over and shepherd you during these times of uncertainty and fear. He knows you. He hears your pleas. He is faithful and dependable. He will fulfill His promises. God has something unimaginable in mind for you personally and the Church collectively—a marvelous work and a wonder. Our best days are ahead of us, not behind us. This is why God gives us modern revelation! Without it, life might feel like flying in a holding pattern, waiting for the fog to lift so we can land safely. The Lord’s purposes for us are much higher than that. Because this is the Church of the living Christ, and because He directs His prophets, we are moving forward and upward to places we’ve never been, to heights we can hardly imagine!

My dear sisters, we have so much to look forward to! The Lord placed you here now because He knew you had the capacity to negotiate the complexities of the latter part of these latter days. He knew you would grasp the grandeur of His work and be eager to help bring it to pass. I am not saying that the days ahead will be easy, but I promise you that the future will be glorious for those who are prepared and who continue to prepare to be instruments in the Lord’s hands. My dear sisters, let us not just endure this current season. Let us embrace the future with faith!

Much has happened in the past two years! Some of you have lost loved ones. Others have lost jobs, livelihood, or health. Still others have lost a sense of peace or hope for the future. My heart goes out to each one of you who has suffered these or other losses. I pray constantly that the Lord will comfort you. As you continue to let God prevail in your life, I know that He is just as optimistic about your future as He has ever been. ... The future is bright for God’s covenant-keeping people. The Lord will increasingly call upon His servants who worthily hold the priesthood to bless, comfort, and strengthen mankind and to help prepare the world and its people for His Second Coming. It behooves each of us to measure up to the sacred ordination we have received. We can do this!

Today and the days ahead require more focused and concentrated effort, guarding against diversions and carelessness. But even with the increasing worldly influences around us, we need not fear. The Lord will never desert His covenant people. There is a compensatory power of spiritual gifts and divine direction for the righteous.

My dear brothers and sisters, last October, President Russell M. Nelson taught, “Now is the time for you and for me to prepare for the Second Coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.” When President Nelson speaks about the Second Coming, it is always with joyful optimism. However, a girl in Primary recently told me that she becomes anxious whenever the Second Coming is mentioned. She said, “I’m scared because bad things are going to happen before Jesus comes again.” It is not just children who may feel this way. The best advice for her, for you, and for me is to follow the Savior’s teachings. His instructions are neither mysterious nor complex. When we follow them, we do not need to fear or be anxious. ... My invitation to the anxious Primary child I mentioned earlier, and to each of you, is to follow Jesus Christ and to trust the Holy Ghost as you would a cherished friend. Rely on those who love you and who love the Savior. Seek God’s guidance to develop your unique abilities, and help others, even when it isn’t easy. You will be ready to meet the Savior, and you can join President Nelson in being joyfully optimistic. In doing so, you help the world prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, and you will be blessed with sufficient hope to enter the rest and joy of the Lord, now and in the future.

Young people can look to the future with optimism — in spite of war, political polarization and uncertainty, President Oaks said. “Be happy,” he said. “Do not be depressed. Trust in the Lord.” Life has always been filled with terrible challenges. “By all means, people should not be depressed because we are surrounded with challenges, whether they are economic or political or social. That is part of what we were put here to experience. … We are optimistic because we trust the Lord and know that he loves us and he set us up to succeed, not to fail.”

Program Manager for Gospel Learning and Teaching Hank Smith: Before we move on, I just have one quick question for you. A lot of our listeners are probably never going to visit Utah, let alone the Church Office Building. What's it like in there? Is there a good feeling? They might hear online somewhere, oh the church is really struggling. Oh man, it's all doom and gloom. But from what I hear from you, uh, not at all. Mike Madsen: It's so opposite of that. I have not experienced doom and gloom. The environment is incredible. We as a part of our job obviously we'll get to interface with members of the Seventy and members of the Twelve and the First Presidency and they're so optimistic not only about what's going on but the future. They are optimistic, positive, upbeat, and they have reason to be. This is a great time to be alive. We're getting ready for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. I think the Second Coming's got a bad rap. It's going to be one of the greatest times. It's the great and dreadful day. And let's emphasize great. ... We have this moment with the triumphal entry. The multitudes cried, hosanna to the Son of David. I want to testify that Jesus Christ is the King of kings and He will come again. We live in such an incredible time. Can you believe we're alive in this moment? I just sometimes wake up and say we are alive in this moment. The gospel of Jesus Christ is being spread throughout the world and we get to watch it. I had a really intimate and kind of exciting experience with President Nelson I'd like to share with you. He gave me permission to share this. I had a chance to do these Face-to-Face events where we would have members of the Twelve and their spouses on live broadcast. We were taking in questions live from youth around the world. And we had one of these prepared or planned for President Nelson. He was going to do it. This is when he was the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. I'd had an impression that I wanted to share with him. And I said, "President, how would you feel if we instead of doing a Face-to-Face event where you're answering questions with your sweet wife that we change that and do a global worldwide broadcast for the youth of the church?" I was kind of nervous. President Hinckley gave one when he gave the Be's talk and President Benson had addressed the youth in general conference and I said it'd be kind of like that. He began to smile and I began to get more confidence. This was the Hope of Israel talk. And he looked at me and he said, "Mike, let's do it." Then he said this, "We need to get the youth ready for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, for He is coming." And when the Lord's prophet looked at me with this penetrating gaze and said, "He is coming." The hair on the back of my neck was standing up. The King of kings is coming. He said, "We need to get the youth ready for Him to come." And then when you think about what his subject matter was in this broadcast, I'm inviting you to be in the Lord's battalion. We've been talking about battalions today. The Lord's battalion to gather Israel again. David united Israel. Let's unite and let's gather them again. How can we get the youth ready for the Second Coming? In my mind, from this experience, we invite them and help them gather Israel. We are at a time when we're seeing missionary work and we are preparing the world for this Davidic King, Jesus Christ, to come again.
