Counselor in the First Presidency One of these days, the Savior’s going to come. I’m making no prediction, but I know that that day is drawing near, when He will come, and His kingdom will be set up upon the face of the earth and righteousness will prevail. We are, and I’ve said this a great many times, in my judgement, we are living in the late afternoon of Saturday, the Saturday of time. There is a great work yet to be performed. The gospel must be taught diligently to people who don’t understand. But I read what’s written in that revelation given to the prophet

I have chosen to speak last of the Lord’s ultimate responsibility, which lies yet in the future. That will be his masterful status as the Millennial Messiah. When that day comes, the physical face of the earth will have been changed: Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain. [Isaiah 40:4] Then Jesus will return to the earth. His second coming will be no secret. It will be broadly known. The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. [Isaiah 40:5] Then, “the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). He will govern from two world capitals—one in old Jerusalem (see Zechariah 14:4–7; D&C 45:48–66; 133:19–21) and the other in the New Jerusalem “built upon the American Continent” (Articles of Faith 1:10; see also Ether 13:3–10; D&C 84:2–4). From these centers he will direct the affairs of his church and kingdom. Then he “shall reign for ever and ever” (Revelation 11:15; see also Exodus 15:18; Psalms 146:10; Mosiah 3:5; D&C 76:108). In that day he will bear new titles and be surrounded by special Saints. He will be known as “Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that [will be] with him [will be those who] are called, and chosen, and faithful” to their trust here in mortality (Revelation 17:14; see also 19:16). ... His church has been restored to the earth in these latter days to prepare the world and its people for his second coming. I so testify in the name of

Since last we met together in a general conference six months ago, there have been continuing signs that circumstances in the world aren’t necessarily as we would wish. The global economy, which six months ago appeared to be sagging, seems to have taken a nosedive, and for many weeks now the financial outlook has been somewhat grim. In addition, the moral footings of society continue to slip, while those who attempt to safeguard those footings are often ridiculed and, at times, picketed and persecuted. Wars, natural disasters, and personal misfortunes continue to occur. It would be easy to become discouraged and cynical about the future—or even fearful of what might come—if we allowed ourselves to dwell only on that which is wrong in the world and in our lives. Today, however, I’d like us to turn our thoughts and our attitudes away from the troubles around us and to focus instead on our blessings as members of the Church. The Apostle Paul declared, “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Excerpting entire passages of scripture from Matthew 24, 2 Nephi 28 and Mormon 8, Elder Ballard firmly established that ancient prophecies regarding the last days preceding the Savior's second coming aren't just being fulfilled but are coming to pass at an accelerated rate. "I'm telling you what the Savior said would be the signs of the acceleration towards that day when He shall come," he said. "We could stay here for a couple of hours talking about all of the prophecies of what will occur in the last days. We're in the last days — you can quote me on that. And it is moving more rapidly." Conditions that Elder Ballard specifically cited as fulfillment of prophecy and signs of the times include "pornography and how real affection and how true and real love are being disturbed by Satan and his minions" (see Matthew 24:12); "an acceleration of the gospel going to all nations" (see Matthew 24:14); and how "Mother Nature is letting its power be seen throughout the world at a more accelerated pace" (see Mormon 8:30-31). Since last we met, the Church has continued to provide much-needed humanitarian assistance in various locations around the world. In the past three months alone, humanitarian assistance has been provided in French Polynesia, Mongolia, Bolivia, Peru, Arizona, Mexico, Portugal, and Uganda, among other areas. Most recently we have assisted in Haiti and Chile following devastating earthquakes and tsunamis in those areas. We express our love to our Church members who have suffered in these disasters. What would be the perspective of our Father in Heaven and of His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, on the Book of Mormon? Their perspective would surely be shaped by two long-standing promises They have made to all mankind. These two promises are interrelated, well documented, still in force, and yet to be fulfilled. The first is Their ancient promise to gather scattered Israel. The second is Their long-standing promise of the Second Coming of the Lord. ... Why is this promise of gathering so crucial? Because the gathering of Israel is necessary to prepare the world for the Second Coming! And the Book of Mormon is God’s instrument needed to accomplish both of these divine objectives. The Book of Mormon is a gift from God to the entire world. It is the only book the Lord has testified to be true. It is a gift from Nephi, Jacob, Mormon, Moroni, and its inspired and martyred translator, the Prophet Joseph Smith. The Book of Mormon is purposely addressed to the remnant of the house of Israel. Regarding the Second Coming, we know it is “now nigh at hand, and in a time [yet] to come” (D&C 63:53). And when the Savior comes again, it will not be in secret. Meanwhile, much work must be done to gather Israel and prepare the world for the glorious

Brothers and sisters, we are responsible to safeguard these sacred freedoms and rights for ourselves and our posterity. What can you and I do? First, we can become informed. Be aware of issues in your community that could have an impact on religious liberty. Second, in your individual capacity, join with others who share our commitment to religious freedom. Work side by side to protect religious freedom. Third, live your life to be a good example of what you believe—in word and deed. How we live our religion is far more important than what we may say about our religion. Our Savior’s Second Coming is drawing nearer. Let us not delay in this great cause. Remember Captain Moroni, who hoisted the title of liberty inscribed with the words “In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children.” Let us remember the people’s response: exercising their agency, they “came running together” with a covenant to act. My beloved brothers and sisters, don’t walk! Run! Run to receive the blessings of agency by following the Holy Ghost and exercising the freedoms God has given us to do His will.

We all just sang “Come, O Thou King of Kings.” Our faith grows as we anticipate the glorious day of the Savior’s return to the earth. The thought of His coming stirs my soul. It will be breathtaking! The scope and grandeur, the vastness and magnificence, will exceed anything mortal eyes have ever seen or experienced. In that day He will not come “wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger,” but He will appear “in the clouds of heaven, clothed with power and great glory; with all the holy angels.” We will hear “the voice of the archangel, and … the trump of God.” The sun and the moon will be transformed, and “stars [will] be hurled from their places.” You and I, or those who follow us, “the saints … from [every quarter] of the earth,” “shall be quickened and … caught up to meet him,” and those who have died in righteousness, they too will “be caught up to meet him in the midst … of heaven.” Then, a seemingly impossible experience: “All flesh,” the Lord says, “shall see me together.” How will it happen? We do not know. But I testify it will happen—exactly as prophesied. We will kneel in reverence, “and the Lord shall utter his voice, and all the ends of the earth shall hear it.” “It shall be … as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder.” “[Then] the Lord, … the Savior, shall stand in the midst of his people.” There will be unforgettable reunions with the angels of heaven and the Saints upon the earth. But most important, as Isaiah declares, “All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God,” and He “shall reign over all flesh.” In that day the skeptics will be silent, “for every ear shall hear … , and every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess” that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, the Savior and Redeemer of the world. Today is Easter. We rejoice with Christians all over the world in His glorious Resurrection and in our own promised resurrection. May we prepare for His coming by rehearsing these glorious events over and over in our own minds and with those we love, and may His prayer be our prayer: “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”

Through their husbands’ final hours and continuing to the present day, these stalwart women have shown the strength and courage that covenant-keeping women always demonstrate. It would be impossible to measure the influence that such women have, not only on families but also on the Lord’s Church, as wives, mothers, and grandmothers; as sisters and aunts; as teachers and leaders; and especially as exemplars and devout defenders of the faith. This has been true in every gospel dispensation since the days of Adam and Eve. Yet the women of this dispensation are distinct from the women of any other because this dispensation is distinct from any other.4 [See Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, comp. Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., 5 vols. (1957–66), 4:166. Note: All previous dispensations were limited to a small segment of the world and were terminated by apostasy. In contrast, this dispensation will not be limited in location or time. It will fill the world and merge with the Second Coming of the Lord.] This distinction brings both privileges and responsibilities. Thirty-six years ago, in 1979, President Spencer W. Kimball made a profound prophecy about the impact that covenant-keeping women would have on the future of the Lord’s Church. He prophesied: “Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world … will be drawn to the Church in large numbers. This will happen to the degree that the women of the Church reflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives and to the degree that the women of the Church are seen as distinct and different—in happy ways—from the women of the world.” My dear sisters, you who are our vital associates during this winding-up scene, the day that President Kimball foresaw is today. You are the women he foresaw! Your virtue, light, love, knowledge, courage, character, faith, and righteous lives will draw good women of the world, along with their families, to the Church in unprecedented numbers!

I pray the Holy Ghost will help you liken these scriptures to you and your family (see 1 Nephi 19:23) and fill your hearts with the true spirit of Christmas. Our account begins in the land of Zarahemla a few years before the birth of the Savior. Samuel the Lamanite came among the people to preach repentance and prophesy of Christ. Now please try to imagine that you are 10 years old and a member of the multitude listening to a prophet of God foretell future events. Samuel declared: “Behold, I give unto you a sign; for five years more cometh, and behold, then cometh the Son of God to redeem all those who shall believe on his name. ... As time passed, “the prophecies of the prophets began to be fulfilled more fully; for there began to be greater signs and greater miracles wrought among the people” (3 Nephi 1:4). Please now imagine five years have passed and you are now approximately 15 years old. You can recall clearly the prophecies of Samuel as you consider the present circumstances in which you live. “But there were some who began to say that the time was past for the words to be fulfilled, which were spoken by Samuel, the Lamanite." ... Then, indeed, the sign of Christ’s birth foretold by Samuel was given. In a climate of religious persecution and at the tender age of approximately 15, you marveled one evening as the sun went down but there was no darkness. ... The day Jesus was born was a day of deliverance for the believers in the New World. Light as the sign of the Savior’s birth literally saved their lives.

So, now a question as I conclude: What if you learned that the Savior had already returned to this earth—that He, as part of His Second Coming, had already met with some of His true followers in several marvelous, large gatherings—gatherings about which the world, including CNN and the blogosphere, knew nothing. If you found out that the Savior was already on the earth, what would you desperately want to do today, and what would you be willing and ready to do tomorrow?

The gathering of Israel is a miracle. It is like an enormous puzzle whose pieces will be set in place prior to the glorious events of the Second Coming. Just as we might be perplexed with a mountain of puzzle pieces, the early Saints must have seen the commission to take the restored gospel to all the world as a nearly impossible task. But they began, one person, one puzzle piece at a time, finding the straight edges, working to rightly frame this divine work. Little by little, the stone cut without hands began to roll forth; from hundreds to thousands, to tens of thousands, and now millions of covenant Latter-day Saints across every nation are connecting the puzzle pieces of this marvelous work and a wonder. Each of us is a piece of the puzzle, and each of us helps to set in place other essential pieces. You are important to this great cause. Our view ahead is now clear. We can see the miracle continuing and the Lord’s hand guiding us as we complete the gaps that remain. Then, “the Great Jehovah shall say the work is done,” and He will return in majesty and glory. President Thomas S. Monson has said: “Now is the time for members and missionaries to come together, to work together … to bring souls unto Him. … He will assist us in our labors if we will act in faith to fulfill His work.” The divinely appointed responsibility that once rested primarily upon the shoulders of full-time missionaries now rests upon us all. We all want to share the restored gospel, and gratefully, thousands are baptized each week. But even with this wonderful blessing, our concern for our brothers and sisters and our desire to please God bring a compelling urgency to share and strengthen the kingdom of God across the world.

in the Relief Society General Presidency The prophets are speaking about women. You will hear some of their words in this meeting. For my text I am going back almost 40 years to a remarkable prophecy written by President Spencer W. Kimball. September 1979 was only the second time the women of the global Church had met in their own general meeting. President Kimball had prepared his talk, but when the day of the conference came, he was in the hospital. So instead, he asked his wife, Camilla Eyring Kimball, to read his remarks on his behalf. Sister Kimball read the prophet’s words, which emphasized the influence of LDS women on the good women of the world prior to the Second Coming of the Savior. Near the end, there was an electrifying charge to the women of the Church that we have been talking about ever since. Let me quote a little of what President Kimball said: “Finally, my dear sisters, may I suggest to you something that has not been said before or at least in quite this way. Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world … will be drawn to the Church in large numbers. This will happen to the degree that the women of the Church reflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives and to the degree that the women of the Church are seen as distinct and different—in happy ways—from the women of the world. “Among the real heroines in the world who will come into the Church are women who are more concerned with being righteous than with being selfish. These real heroines have true humility, which places a higher value on integrity than on visibility. … “… It will be … female exemplars of the Church [who] will be a significant force in both the numerical and the spiritual growth of the Church in the last days.” What a prophetic statement that is. Just to summarize: It will be the good relationships of women that will trigger much of the major growth coming to the Church in the years ahead. The friendships that Relief Society women, young women, and Primary girls build with sincere, faithful, godly women and girls of other faiths and beliefs will be a significant force in how the Church grows in the last days. President Kimball called these women from other backgrounds “heroines” who will be more concerned with being righteous than selfish, who will show us that integrity is more valuable than visibility.

Just think of the excitement and urgency of it all: every prophet commencing with Adam has seen our day. And every prophet has talked about our day, when Israel would be gathered and the world would be prepared for the Second Coming of the Savior. Think of it! Of all the people who have ever lived on planet earth, we are the ones who get to participate in this final, great gathering event. How exciting is that! Our Heavenly Father has reserved many of His most noble spirits—perhaps, I might say, His finest team—for this final phase. Those noble spirits—those finest players, those heroes—are you! I testify that the gathering is now, and it is real. In the year I was born, the total membership of the Church was less than 600,000 people, with no members in South America. Today there are more than 16 million members worldwide, with nearly 3 million members in South America. ... Think of this, my dear young brothers and sisters, right now I am preparing for the day when I will be required to give an accounting to the Prophet Joseph Smith, to President Brigham Young, and others—and ultimately to the Lord—about my stewardship as God’s prophet upon the earth today. ... World conditions increasingly require deepening individual conversion to and strengthening faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and His Atonement. The Lord has prepared us, line upon line, for the perilous times that we now face. In recent years, the Lord has guided us to address related core concerns, including: Honoring the Sabbath day and the sacred ordinance of the sacrament has again been emphasized for the last three years. Under the bishop’s direction, strengthened elders quorums and Relief Societies are focused on the purpose and divinely appointed responsibilities of the Church and helping members make and keep sacred covenants. Ministering in a higher and holier way is being joyfully adopted. Beginning with the end in mind, temple covenants and family history service are becoming a purposeful part of the covenant path.

Men can and often do communicate the love of Heavenly Father and the Savior to others. But women have a special gift for it—a divine endowment. You have the capacity to sense what someone needs—and when he or she needs it. You can reach out, comfort, teach, and strengthen someone in his or her very moment of need. ... My dear sisters, you have special spiritual gifts and propensities. Tonight I urge you, with all the hope of my heart, to pray to understand your spiritual gifts—to cultivate, use, and expand them, even more than you ever have. You will change the world as you do so. ... In Relief Society, women in various ages and stages of life meet together. Each decade of life brings unique challenges, and yet, there you were, week after week, mingling together, growing and teaching the gospel together, and making a real difference in the world. ... Now, following your example, Melchizedek Priesthood bearers are members of the elders quorum. These men range in age from 18 to 98 (maybe more), with equally wide-ranging priesthood and Church experiences. These brethren can now create stronger fraternal linkages, learn together, and bless others more effectively. ... It is a cause that desperately needs women, because women shape the future. So tonight I’m extending a prophetic plea to you, the women of the Church, to shape the future by helping to gather scattered Israel. ... My dear sisters, we need you! We “need your strength, your conversion, your conviction, your ability to lead, your wisdom, and your voices.” We simply cannot gather Israel without you. I love you and thank you and now bless you with the ability to leave the world behind as you assist in this crucial and urgent work. Today I feel compelled to discuss with you a matter of great importance. Some weeks ago, I released a statement regarding a course correction for the name of the Church. I did this because the Lord impressed upon my mind the importance of the name He decreed for His Church, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As you would expect, responses to this statement and to the revised style guide have been mixed. Many members immediately corrected the name of the Church on their blogs and social media pages...... It is not a name change, It is not rebranding, It is not cosmetic, It is not a whim, And it is not inconsequential. Instead, it is a correction. It is the command of the Lord. Joseph Smith did not name the Church restored through him; neither did Mormon. It was the Savior Himself who said, “For thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” ... When we omit His name from His Church, we are inadvertently removing Him as the central focus of our lives. ... My dear brothers and sisters, I promise you that if we will do our best to restore the correct name of the Lord’s Church, He whose Church this is will pour down His power and blessings upon the heads of the Latter-day Saints, the likes of which we have never seen. We will have the knowledge and power of God to help us take the blessings of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people and to prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Lord. So, what’s in a name? When it comes to the name of the Lord’s Church, the answer is “Everything!” Jesus Christ directed us to call the Church by His name because it is His Church, filled with His power.

I wish to speak of the Savior’s parable in which a householder “went out early in the morning to hire labourers.” After employing the first group at 6:00 in the morning, he returned at 9:00 a.m., at 12:00 noon, and at 3:00 in the afternoon, hiring more workers as the urgency of the harvest increased. The scripture says he came back a final time, “about the eleventh hour” (approximately 5:00 p.m.), and hired a concluding number. ... So if you have made covenants, keep them. If you haven’t made them, make them. If you have made them and broken them, repent and repair them. It is never too late so long as the Master of the vineyard says there is time. Please listen to the prompting of the Holy Spirit telling you right now, this very moment, that you should accept the atoning gift of the Lord Jesus Christ and enjoy the fellowship of His labor. Brothers and sisters, we're at a moment in this church, His church, the Savior's church, when there is a demonstrable, near tangible hastening of the work. These continue to be the latter days, with no one knowing when that last last day is going to be. Nevertheless, we know the undeviating trajectory toward it began 198 years ago in a grove of trees near Palmyra, New York. Continuing revelation to prophets, seers, and revelators since that first great theophany to the Prophet Joseph has stimulated significant developments down through the years, including in the present day. There will be more. On his recent trip through South America, President Russell M. Nelson said, and I quote, "We are witnesses to a process of restoration. If you think the Church has been fully restored, you're just seeing the beginning. There is much more to come . . . Wait till next year. And then the next year. Eat your vitamin pills. Get your rest. It's going to be exciting." I'm not an apocalyptic person, and none of us should sit around waiting for extraterrestrial rapture, but we do stand unequivocally with those angelic beings in Acts 1 who said, "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." In what the ordinances and the scriptures call that Day of the Lord Jesus Christ, I imagine not only the dramatic universal appearance of his light coming out of the east and his descent upon two Jerusalems, but I also imagine a more personal encounter: a solitary Christ standing at a solitary door making a solitary knock. Whose door is this? What chamber does it lead? I've always assumed it was the door of a home, mine and yours and everyone's. Perhaps it's more figuratively the door to each human heart. Tonight I asked that we make it the door of the Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship at Brigham Young University and the academic world it hopes to influence. And what's the invitation? If any scholar hear my voice and open the door, I will come into him or her and will sup with him and he with me. The question for the Institute is the question eventually for all of us, all humankind: how do we best and most warmly open that door personally and professionally, and on what do we sup when the Master is admitted? Will our time and conversation in the Maxwell Institute be consistent in every way with his gospel, his grace, his life, his loving persistent plea to come follow me? ... Regarding that faith-filled scholarship of which Elder Maxwell speaks, may I note plainly one thing - the one thing we expect you, among other things, to do that is central to your raison d'être, it is to undergird and inform the pledge Elder Maxwell made when he said of uncontested criticism, "No more slam dunks." We asked you as part of a larger game plan to always keep a scholarly hand fully in the face of those who oppose us. As a ne'er-do-well athlete of yesteryear, I was always told you play offense for the crowd, you play defense for the coach. Your coaches will be very happy to have you play both. ... To his counselors and to us in the Quorum of the Twelve, President Russell M. Nelson said of this matter, "While acknowledging we have no control over what other people may call us, we cannot call ourselves by any other than the name the Lord has prescribed. To the degree that we tolerate our own use of Mormon or Mormonism," he continued, "we will be held accountable for this error in nomenclature." To a public audience just weeks ago, he said "The name of the Church is not negotiable." So, dear friends, when coming from our own tongues, the use of Mormonism is anathema and so is Mormon if it pertains to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a title per se. President Nelson understands fully that renaming Mormon Studies is a concern. He wrote to me, he was concerned enough to write to me an email and said, and I quote, "Part of the challenge at the Maxwell Institute will it be its identity never more obvious than in the subset titled Mormon Studies. Is this an institute for studies of the Book of Mormon or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or the restoration of the gospel?" We need to help, we need to help them know who they are and why they exist. He continued, "I truly believe that if they can claim the name of the Lord Jesus Christ some way in their name, the Lord will bless them in their mission." It's a very private email, but he gave me permission to share it. ... Elder Maxwell once quoted J.R.R. Tolkien's Gandalf: "It is not our part to master all the tides of the world but to do what is in us for the succor of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule." That piece, ironically, it strikes me, is from The Return of the King. We in this room tonight are tilling cleaner earth because Elder Neal Maxwell and his earlier apostolic associates have tried to counter evil and error in every field in which they found it. Some of the weather in which they worked was stormy indeed, fatal on more than one occasion. Some of the weather ahead will be equally so for our children. "Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, 'The Maxwell Legacy in the 21st Century' (2018 Neal A. Maxwell Lecture)." video, 21:22, YouTube, posted by Maxwell Institute, January 25, 2019. https://youtu.be/qpUN29orJmM?si=7VI-1dYqCxGgqKws. Credit: Catherine Morrison

Yesterday’s visit with the Saints in Samoa was a blessing and evidence of their great faith. The forecast promised rain, but just after the opening hymn, the rain ceased. It was remarkable—even as if their faith turned off the rain! I encouraged the thousands of men, women, and children in attendance to protect their families from the deception that they will see in the future. The Church, when restored in its fulness, will prepare the world for the coming of the Lord, but as members, we will be persecuted for our beliefs. We must fortify ourselves against attacks of the adversary. Though we will have trials, please do not be discouraged. Our Heavenly Father wants for us to be happy. He will provide us with the needed revelation, strength, and ability to judge right from wrong and to experience joy in our lives.

What a marvelous visit we had to Latin America. As I saw the faces of so many faithful members, I felt impressed that the Lord has reserved these special, exceptional people for this time when the world is being prepared for the Lord’s Second Coming. And the same is true for you—no matter where you live. The Lord has reserved you for these modern days on the earth. The Restoration is a continuing process. Great power lies in learning who you really are. Please take time to think prayerfully about these facts: •You are an elect son or daughter of God. •You were created in His image. •You were taught in the spirit world to prepare you for anything and everything you would encounter during this latter part of these latter days. That teaching endures within you! Learn for yourselves who you really are. Ask your Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, how He feels about you and your mission here on earth. If you ask with real intent, over time the Spirit will whisper the life-changing truth to you. Record those impressions and review them often, and follow through with exactness. I promise you that when you begin to catch even a glimpse of how your Heavenly Father sees you and what He is counting on you to do for Him, your life will never be the same!

Of course, the crowning jewel of the Restoration is the holy temple. Its sacred ordinances and covenants are pivotal to preparing a people who are ready to welcome the Savior at His Second Coming. ... Individual worthiness to enter the Lord’s house requires much individual spiritual preparation. But with the Lord’s help, nothing is impossible. In some respects, it is easier to build a temple than it is to build a people prepared for a temple. Individual worthiness requires a total conversion of mind and heart to be more like the Lord, to be an honest citizen, to be a better example, and to be a holier person. ... Now I would like to turn to another topic: plans for the coming year. In the springtime of the year 2020, it will be exactly 200 years since Joseph Smith experienced the theophany that we know as the First Vision. God the Father and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, appeared to Joseph, a 14-year-old youth. That event marked the onset of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ in its fulness, precisely as foretold in the Holy Bible. ... General conference next April will be not only memorable; it will be unforgettable. Now in closing, I leave with you my love and my blessing that each of you may become happier and holier with each passing day. Meanwhile, please be assured that revelation continues in the Church and will continue under the Lord’s direction until “the purposes of God shall be accomplished, and the Great Jehovah shall say the work is done.”

Dear friends, thank you for joining us for #GeneralConference. We thank the Lord for inspiring the messages and the music that have edified us. We know the restored gospel of Jesus Christ will bring hope and joy to people who will hear and heed His doctrine. Thus, the year 2020 will be designated as a bicentennial year. General conference next April will be different from any previous conference. In the next six months, I hope that every member and every family will prepare for a unique conference that will commemorate the very foundations of the restored gospel. You may wish to begin your preparation by reading afresh Joseph Smith’s account of the First Vision as recorded in the Pearl of Great Price. Select your own questions. Design your own plan. Immerse yourself in the glorious light of the Restoration. As you do, general conference next April will not only be memorable; it will be unforgettable.

It is wonderful to be with you again at #GeneralConference. We have just shared some important adjustments intended to help young men and young women develop their sacred personal potential. You will remember that I have invited the youth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to enlist in the Lord’s youth battalion to participate in the greatest cause on earth today—the gathering of Israel. I issued this invitation to our youth because they are unusually gifted in reaching out to others and sharing what they believe in a convincing fashion. The cause of the gathering is an essential part of helping to prepare the world and its people for the Second Coming of the Lord. In each ward, the Lord’s youth battalion is led by a bishop, a dedicated servant of God. His first and foremost responsibility is to care for the young men and young women of his ward. The bishop and his counselors direct the work of the Aaronic Priesthood quorums and the Young Women classes in the ward. I invite you to read the article below for additional information about adjustments that will help bishops fulfill their divinely appointed roles to lead youth.

On various occasions throughout the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we have erected monuments to commemorate important anniversaries. On the Prophet Joseph Smith's 100th birthday in 1905, for example, President Joseph F. Smith dedicated a large obelisk at the Prophet's birthplace in Sharon, Vermont. On another significant centennial, July 24, 1947, one hundred years after the pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley, President George Albert Smith dedicated the “This Is the Place” monument at the mouth of Emigration Canyon in Salt Lake City, Utah. As we anticipated the two hundredth anniversary of the First Vision, received by Joseph Smith, the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles pondered what we might do to commemorate appropriately this unique event that initiated the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ and ushered in the dispensation of the fulness of times. We asked ourselves if another monument should be erected. But as we considered that unique manifestation of revelation, and the historic, international impact of that First Vision, we felt impressed to establish a monument of words—words of solemn and sacred proclamation—written not to be carved in tables of stone, but in words that could be etched in the fleshy tables of all human hearts. During the one hundred ninety years since the Church was organized, only five proclamations have been issued, with the last being, “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” presented by President Gordon B. Hinckley in 1995. Now, as we contemplate this significant time in the history of the world, and the Lord's charge to accelerate the gathering of Israel in preparation for the Second Coming of

As we are now many months into the COVID-19 pandemic, I thought I might share some of what I have learned. I have felt great sorrow about this pandemic. I have mourned with families who have lost loved ones. Many have lost jobs. Some have struggled to find adequate food and supplies. Graduation ceremonies, marriages, and funerals have been canceled or postponed or altered in some way. I feel great compassion for all who have suffered. At the same time, Wendy and I have learned so much. Even through clouds of sorrow, we have found some silver linings. Many families have re-enthroned their homes as sanctuaries of faith. Many better understand how important the family is and that it really is ordained of God, with an eternal destiny. We’ve also learned fear, isolation, and loss can be mitigated by immersing oneself in caring for other people. Countless healthcare professionals have risked their own lives to care for others. Farmers, pharmacists, truckers, grocers, and others have risked their own health to serve the urgent needs of others. Dear friends, the road ahead may be bumpy, but our destination is serene and secure. So, fasten your seatbelt, hang on through the bumps, and do what's right. Your reward will be eternal. In 1831 the Lord made a promise to his Saints. It still applies to each of us today: “Wherefore, be of good cheer, and do not fear, for I the Lord am with you, and will stand by you; and ye shall bear record of me, even

Moroni fortified every Nephite city with embankments, forts, and walls. When the Lamanites came against them, they “were astonished exceedingly, because of the wisdom of the Nephites in preparing their places of security.” Similarly, as turmoil rages around us, we need to create places where we are safe, both physically and spiritually. When your home becomes a personal sanctuary of faith—where the Spirit resides—your home becomes the first line of defense. Likewise, the stakes of Zion are “a refuge from the storm” because they are led by those who hold priesthood keys and exercise priesthood authority. As you continue to follow the counsel of those whom the Lord has authorized to guide you, you will feel greater safety. The temple—the house of the Lord—is a place of security unlike any other. There, you sisters are endowed with priesthood power through the sacred priesthood covenants you make. There, your families are sealed for eternity. Even this year, when access to our temples has been seriously limited, your endowment has given you constant access to God’s power as you have honored your covenants with Him. Simply said, a place of security is anywhere you can feel the presence of the Holy Ghost and be guided by Him.

of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles My dear brothers and sisters, during the last week of His mortal ministry, Jesus taught His disciples to “watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” Among the “things that shall come to pass” before His Second Coming are “wars and rumours of wars[,] … famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.” In the Doctrine and Covenants, the Savior said, “And all things shall be in commotion; … for fear shall come upon all people.” Certainly, we live in a time during which things are in commotion. Many people fear the future, and many hearts have turned away from their faith in God and His Son, Jesus Christ. News reports are filled with accounts of violence. Moral denigration is published online. Cemeteries, churches, mosques, synagogues, and religious shrines have been vandalized. A global pandemic has reached virtually every corner of the earth: millions of people have been infected; over a million have died. School graduations, church worship services, marriages, missionary service, and a host of other important life events have been disrupted. Additionally, countless people have been left alone and isolated. Economic upheavals have caused challenges for so many, especially for the most vulnerable of our Heavenly Father’s children. We have seen people passionately exercising their right to peaceful protest, and we have seen angry mobs riot. At the same time, we continue to see conflicts all around the world. I think often of those of you who are suffering, worried, afraid, or feeling alone. I assure each one of you that the Lord knows you, that He is aware of your concern and anguish, and that He loves you—intimately, personally, deeply, and forever. Each night when I pray, I ask the Lord to bless all who are burdened with grief, pain, loneliness, and sadness. I know that other Church leaders echo that same prayer. Our hearts, individually and collectively, go out to you, and our prayers go to God in your behalf.

With the Hebraic definition of Israel in mind, we find that the gathering of Israel takes on added meaning. The Lord is gathering those who are willing to let God prevail in their lives. As an essential prelude to the Second Coming of the Lord, it is the most important work in the world! This premillennial gathering is an individual saga of expanding faith and spiritual courage for millions of people. Our loving Heavenly Father “so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life," (John 3:16). The Son of God then promised us that “whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die,” (John 11:26). What unspeakable, incomparable gifts from the Father and the Son! On another afternoon, near Paris, my father and I visited the great cathedral at Chartres. Malcolm Miller, a world expert on the cathedral, pointed out three sets of Chartres stained-glass windows. He said they tell a story. The first windows show Adam and Eve leaving the Garden of Eden. The second recount the parable of the good Samaritan. The third depict the Lord’s Second Coming. ... In this Easter season, Jesus Christ invites us to become, like Him, a good Samaritan, to make His Inn (His Church) a refuge for all from life’s bruises and storms. in the Young Men General Presidency Satan has convinced many in the world that there is no God. He has convinced others there is no truth. But even believers are not much better off if we allow him to convince us there is no hurry. We need to feel the urgency to draw closer to God and an urgency to live in accordance with His truth. When the shepherds heard about the birth of the Lord, the scriptures say they came “with haste” (Luke 2:16) to find Him. They did not say, “Tomorrow will be soon enough. Next month will be soon enough.” We would do well to follow the examples of the shepherds and to go with haste in our efforts to serve the Lord. I want to urge you today to proceed “with haste” in your education, in your repentance, and in your efforts to gather Israel. ... Gathering Israel is about preparing for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and that is how we do it. If one million people wanted to join the Church tomorrow, would we be ready? Would we have enough bishops, Relief Society presidents, stake presidents, Young Women presidents? Would we have enough full time missionaries? Would we have enough full-tithe payers? No. We would be totally swamped. And that’s just one million. So, what’s going to happen when Christ comes and says “Hello! By the way, I belong to the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” That’s what he is going to say. Are we going to be ready when two billion people want to join the Church in one day? We have to be ready. Jesus isn’t going to come to watch the Church fail. He is going to come when the Church is ready to succeed. When we have a leadership base strong enough all over the world that we will be able to welcome everyone into the Church and we will be able to, as a Church, as Israel, gather all of God’s children on both sides of the veil home to Him. ... A study was done to determine the influence of Church programs on teenage testimonies and there were two that tied for first place - of all the programs of the Church including Sunday meetings: the two that tied for first place were seminary and EFY. You will have the chance in one week to have the kind of impact that will gather Israel in a big way. That gathering matters. The work of salvation and exaltation matters. Preparing for the Second Coming matters. There is a hurry. FSY was supposed to kick off in 2020. Well we all know what happened then. Then it was supposed to roll out in 2021 and once again it was stopped by the Covid pandemic. Next summer it is going to roll out. At this point the youth don’t even know what it is.

One of the most cherished titles of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is “Prince of Peace.” Ultimately His kingdom will be established including peace and love. We look forward to the millennial reign of the Messiah. Notwithstanding this vision of the millennial reign, we know that world peace and harmony are not prevalent in our day. In my lifetime, I have never seen a greater lack of civility. We are bombarded with angry, contentious language and provocative, devastating actions that destroy peace and tranquility. Peace in the world is not promised or assured until the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The Savior instructed His Apostles that His earthly mission would not achieve universal peace. He taught, “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth.” Universal peace was not part of the Savior’s initial mortal ministry. Universal peace does not exist today. However, personal peace can be achieved despite the anger, contention, and division that blight and corrupt our world today. It has never been more important to seek personal peace.
